Four Sejong University Professors Selected as "Highly Cited Researchers"

[인포스탁데일리=박상철 기자] Han Heesup from the Department of Hotel and Tourism Management, Baik Sung Wook from the Department of Software, Hwang Jinsoo from the Department of Food Service Management, and Shahabaldin Rezania from the Department of Environment, Energy and Geoinformatics at Sejong University have been named among the “Highly Cited Researchers (HCR)” for 2024.

The HCR list, curated annually by Clarivate, a global information analytics company, highlights the top 1% of researchers worldwide based on citation data by field. This distinction represents the top 0.1% of researchers globally. This year, 6,636 researchers from 59 countries made the list. In South Korea, 75 researchers across 12 fields were selected, an increase of 10 from the previous year.

Sejong University saw four professors included in this year’s HCR list, an increase of three compared to last year. Notably, the two South Korean scholars selected in the Social Sciences field both hail from Sejong University.

Professor Han Heesup, recognized in the Social Sciences category, is a leading authority in South Korea’s hotel and tourism management field and has been included on the HCR list for six consecutive years since 2019. For five years until 2023, he was the only South Korean researcher recognized in the Social Sciences category. His research focuses on rapidly evolving technologies such as Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs), Urban Air Mobility (UAM), the Metaverse, Artificial Intelligence (AI), robotic services, chatbots, and drones. Additionally, he explores issues related to human employees increasingly marginalized by advancing technologies.

Also recognized in the Social Sciences category, Professor Hwang Jinsoo applies cutting-edge technologies such as drones, autonomous vehicles, and facial recognition to the food service industry to analyze consumer behavior. His research also includes cross-cultural studies comparing Eastern and Western consumers to enhance the external validity of his findings.

Professor Baik Sung Wook, named in the Cross-Field category, with expertise in artificial intelligence (AI) based on computer vision and big data analytics, is continuously conducting advanced research. He is expanding his research scope to include innovative AI applications aimed at solving various challenges faced by modern society, such as intelligent drones, energy management, battery recycling, advanced material development, and population issues.

In the same category, Professor Shahabaldin Rezania specializes in innovative solutions to pressing environmental challenges. His research areas are Wastewater Treatment, Pollution Remediation, Sustainable Waste Management, and Biomass conversion to Bioenergy. He is leading several projects to help create a cleaner and healthier environment.

Um Jong-Hwa, the president of Sejong University, stated, “The HCR list is a prestigious recognition of researchers with the highest citation records globally.
